Common Women's Health Issues faced in Urgent Care

1-Gynecologic Issues for the Non-OBGYN

Clinicians working in urgent care need to be familiar with common GYN presentations. Learn about best practices in performing proper pelvic exams and how to differentiate various vulvar lesions. Learn about management of various abdominal pain for women including ectopic pregnancy, ovarian torsion, PID and more. Have a good understanding of what types of vaginal bleeding is normal vs abnormal and what can be handled in the office and what needs GYN referral or the ER. This is a good course for those who need a GYN refresher for their practice.

2-Pregnancy Related Issues in the Outpatient Setting: Tips for the Non-OBGYN

Instructor: Dr. Shefali Pathy, Medical Director, Yale GYN

Clinicians working in urgent care need to be familiar with taking care of pregnant patients. Learn about fundamental pregnancy physiologic changes and how it affects cardiovascular, respiratory and GI systems. How do you treat common ailments like asthma, headache, rash, and viral syndrome in a pregnant patient? What are proper management steps for signs of hypertension, vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain? Learn which medications are safe and which ones are not. This is a good course for those who expect pregnant patients in their practice and need a OB refresher.

3-Women and STIs

Instructor: Dr. Anna Huang, Clinical Instructor, NYC DOHMH

Everyday, clinicians working in urgent care and outpatient clinics encounter patients presenting with STI symptoms. With rising antibiotic resistance, more PID cases, pregnancy issues, extragenital findings, and higher incidence of chlamydia and syphilis in women, what are the key things to look for? Our Master Clinician Educator from the NYC Department of Health will share her expert insights on these trends, as well as the current screening and treatment guidelines.

4-Chronic Abdominal & Pelvic Pain in Women: Beyond Quadrants

Instructor: Dr. Stephanie McClellan, Chief Medical Officer, Tia Women Health Clinic

Evaluating abdominal pain based on the classic “abdominal quadrants” does not always work in women presenting with chronic abdominal and pelvic pain. Learn from our Women’s Health OBGYN expert about the 4 major categories of pain involving hormonal GYN, non-hormonal GYN, GI and other associated pain. Endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, adhesions, cancer, interstitial cystitis, IBS, IBD, celiac disease, fibromyalgia and more.

5-Understanding and Supporting the Mental Health of Women

Instructor: Dr. Amy Mednick, Clinical Educator, Mt. Sinai & Columbia University

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and ADHD in women are common presentations seen in primary care, outpatient clinics and urgent cares. ADHD medication usage has surged 300% in reproductive aged women during the early 2000’s. Knowing how to recognize the signs, diagnosing early and offering appropriate treatment for all these disorders is important. Being able to answer common questions regarding medication and mental health during pregnancy and pre-conception planning for your female patient is crucial. How often do relapse occur if they stopped their meds?

6-Medical Nutrition Therapy for Women

You are what you eat. Every clinician know the importance of nutrition and diet but few have proper training in this field and what to recommend in the setting of actual cases. Our Master Clinicians instructor created a dietary/nutrition company used by Teladoc patients everyday. Learn from her as she goes over nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention and evaluation for common cases in women. Learn to treat the body as a whole and offer sound advice for patients looking for a complete treatment plan.

7-Hysteria and Headaches

Instructor: Dr. Katherine Miao, Medical Director, CityMD

It’s crazy to think that “Female Hysteria” used to be an actual medical diagnosis in the early 1900’s. Even now, many female patients with vague and strange symptoms are sometimes overlooked or underappreciated by unseasoned clinicians. What may seem like exaggerated or non-corresponding complaints can be very real symptoms and disease to these patients. Learn from our Master Clinicians Emergency Medicine and Urgent Care instructor as she goes thru various case vignettes in differentiating between various headaches and symptoms, that to the untrained eye, could lead to inaccurate diagnosis or under treatment.

8-Can't Miss Abdominal Pain in Women

Instructor: Dr. Katherine Miao, Medical Director, CityMD

Abdominal pain can vary greatly among women in degrees of pain and nature of presentation. Learn to have a healthy degree of suspicion for potentially disastrous outcomes when red flag symptoms and signs are present. Recognize which scenario requires additional workup or a trip to the ER, and help lower medical risks and errors. In this course, you will review several cases where the actual diagnoses are commonly missed.

9-Updates in Contraceptives

Instructor: Dr. Martha Simmons, Medical Director, Planned Parenthood

What do you do when a patient walks in asking for contraceptives and advice? Do you have enough knowledge to give advice on IUD's, birth control pills, depo shots and other methods? What are your choices on emergency contraception? How do you communicate this with women or patients who identify as transgender or non-binary?

10-BONUS: Why Telemedicine is Great for Women and Children

Instructor: Dr. Laura Yalden, American Well
